1 ‘Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
    my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
    and he will bring justice to the nations.
2Â He will not shout or cry out,
    or raise his voice in the streets.
3Â A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4Â Â Â Â Â he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
    In his teaching the islands will put their hope.’
5 This is what God the Lord says –
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
    who gives breath to its people,
    and life to those who walk on it:
6 ‘I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
    I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people
    and a light for the Gentiles,
7Â to open eyes that are blind,
    to free captives from prison
    and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
8 ‘I am the Lord; that is my name!
    I will not yield my glory to another
    or my praise to idols.
9Â See, the former things have taken place,
    and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
    I announce them to you.’
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.
11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong – 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
14Â I am a debtor both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15Â That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
