1Ā Listen to me, you islands;
Ā Ā Ā Ā hear this, you distant nations:
before I was born the Lord called me;
Ā Ā Ā Ā from my motherās womb he has spoken my name.
2Ā He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
Ā Ā Ā Ā in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow
Ā Ā Ā Ā and concealed me in his quiver.
3Ā He said to me, āYou are my servant,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Israel, in whom I will display my splendour.ā
4Ā But I said, āI have laboured in vain;
Ā Ā Ā Ā I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due to me is in the Lordās hand,
Ā Ā Ā Ā and my reward is with my God.ā
5Ā And now the Lord saysĀ ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā he who formed me in the womb to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
Ā Ā Ā Ā and gather Israel to himself,
for I am honoured in the eyes of the Lord
Ā Ā Ā Ā and my God has been my strengthĀ ā
6Ā he says:
āIt is too small a thing for you to be my servant
Ā Ā Ā Ā to restore the tribes of Jacob
Ā Ā Ā Ā and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
Ā Ā Ā Ā that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.ā
7Ā This is what the Lord saysĀ ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā the Redeemer and Holy One of IsraelĀ ā
to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation,
Ā Ā Ā Ā to the servant of rulers:
āKings will see you and stand up,
Ā Ā Ā Ā princes will see and bow down,
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
Ā Ā Ā Ā the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.ā
18Ā While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, āMy daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.ā 19Ā Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20Ā Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21Ā She said to herself, āIf I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.ā
22Ā Jesus turned and saw her. āTake heart, daughter,ā he said, āyour faith has healed you.ā And the woman was healed at that moment.
23Ā When Jesus entered the synagogue leaderās house and saw the noisy crowd and the people playing pipes, 24Ā he said, āGo away. The girl is not dead but asleep.ā But they laughed at him. 25Ā After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26Ā News of this spread through all that region.
27Ā As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, āHave mercy on us, Son of David!ā
28Ā When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, āDo you believe that I am able to do this?ā
āYes, Lord,ā they replied.
29Ā Then he touched their eyes and said, āAccording to your faith let it be done to youā; 30Ā and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, āSee that no one knows about this.ā 31Ā But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
32Ā While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33Ā And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, āNothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.ā
34Ā But the Pharisees said, āIt is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.ā
