1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Ā Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3Ā And God said, āLet there be light,ā and there was light. 4Ā God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5Ā God called the light ādayā, and the darkness he called ānightā. And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the first day.
6Ā And God said, āLet there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.ā 7Ā So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8Ā God called the vault āskyā. And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the second day.
9Ā And God said, āLet the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.ā And it was so. 10Ā God called the dry ground ālandā, and the gathered waters he called āseasā. And God saw that it was good.
11Ā Then God said, āLet the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.ā And it was so. 12Ā The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13Ā And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the third day.
14Ā And God said, āLet there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15Ā and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.ā And it was so. 16Ā God made two great lightsĀ ā the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17Ā God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18Ā to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19Ā And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the fourth day.
20Ā And God said, āLet the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.ā 21Ā So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22Ā God blessed them and said, āBe fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.ā 23Ā And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the fifth day.
24Ā And God said, āLet the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.ā And it was so. 25Ā God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26Ā Then God said, āLet us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.ā
27Ā So God created mankind in his own image,
Ā Ā Ā Ā in the image of God he created them;
Ā Ā Ā Ā male and female he created them.
28Ā God blessed them and said to them, āBe fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.ā
29Ā Then God said, āI give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30Ā And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the groundĀ ā everything that has the breath of life in itĀ ā I give every green plant for food.ā And it was so.
31Ā God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morningĀ ā the sixth day.
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2Ā By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3Ā Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
1 āDo not judge, or you too will be judged. 2Ā For in the same way as you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3Ā āWhy do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brotherās eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4Ā How can you say to your brother, āLet me take the speck out of your eye,ā when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5Ā You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brotherās eye.
6Ā āDo not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
7Ā āAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8Ā For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9Ā āWhich of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Ā Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11Ā If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12Ā So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
